I was in the local swimming pool yesterday.

I say bye to my girlfriend out in the hallway before we head to our gender-separated changing rooms and showers.

I find an available locker, undress, and lock my clothes in the locker. The moment I turn around, and am about to head for the shower, the door to the changing room opens wide.

A woman is holding the door to let her 3 boys in. She has full view of at least three completely naked men and several preteen boys. She makes eye contact with me. Behind her, other guests are walking to/from the female changing room further down the hallway.

She says bye to her boys and closes the door to continue down to her changing room.

Everyone acts like this is completely natural.

Now imagine if a man did this with his daughters and holds the door open to the female changing room while looking at the other female guests and preteen girls.

A Horse Lantern That Cannot Be Extinguished

Excerpt from The Red Legendary of Jing Gangshan

People hiding in the mountain didn’t feel any chaos and noise in the village. They stepped out of mountains and headed to village. When they got back, they surprisingly found: the soldiers were making beds and ready to spend the night on the bare floor in the Zhong’s ancestral shrine in stead of their houses. Commissioner MAO and several guards lived in a small room midway between the association store and the grocery store next to the ancestral hall, with soldiers living in two rooms beside.

- -What a poor army! The villagers tried hard to persuade the soldiers to stay at their own houses. But the soldiers turned them down according to the discipline of the revolutionary army. Seeing that the soldiers could not be convinced to stay with them, worrying that the dark ancestral hall would cause inconvenience for the soldiers to rest at night, more than ten horse lanterns, which were used to light their house and now were replaced by oil lamps, were brought in haste to Chairman Mao and the soldiers. After dinner, they were informed that Chairman Mao were bringing the troops to Sanwan to start a revolution and liberate the poor. In great delight, they lit oil lamps, torches and bamboo sticks from door to door. the blinker lights were just like glowing fireflies lit up the whole village.

To be continue.

Once a king travelled around his country and one day he was very tired and he wanted to have a rest. Now he stood on the road between two houses, the one large and beautiful, the other small and poor. The large one belonged to a rich man, and the small one belonged to a poor man. He went to the large one. The rich man looked at the traveler from head to foot, and because the king was wearing old clothes, and did not look like one who had much money. He said, “No, I cannot take you in, my rooms are full of things. Go away quickly,” and with this words he closed the door and left the king standing there. So the king went across to the small house and knocked. The poor man opened the little door and let the traveler come in. The poor man's wife welcomed him, then she cooked some potatoes and carrots. The king sat down with the man and his wife, and he enjoyed their food very much. When they finished the supper and it was bed-time, the woman asked the king to have a sleep at their home. The next day the king gave a lot of money to the poor man and thanked him a lot.

The Ice Hotel is in Jukkasjarvi, a village in Sweden 200 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle. Every winter, a team of architects, designers and snow builders build the hotel. This year there are 80 rooms.

Everything is made of ice. The walls, the floors, the ceilings, and even the furniture are made of ice. The beds are made of ice, too, but guests sleep on warm deer skins. Outside it can be -37℃, so inside it feels quite comfortable. The hotel has a bar, where guests can drink vodka from glasses made of ice. It's very popular — because there isn't much else to do.

To spend a night at Jules Underwater Lodge in Florida, guests need to scuba dive seven meters under the sea. They enter a small house through a door at the bottom of the building. Inside, the kitchen is stored with food and there is a fridge and a microwave oven. There is a hot shower and comfortable beds and lots of books, DVDs and video games. Most guests, however, spend their time at one of the large windows watching different fishes swimming by.

My two kids are seemingly at each other's throats about 106% of the time, so when we first announced that we were going to make an offer on a new home it was no surprise that they immediately started arguing over who got the bigger room.

When we went back to look at the house a second time, they suddenly turned into professional salesmen, each espousing the redeeming qualities of the room they did not want, trying to convince the other that the smaller room was, in fact, the better room, and they were willing, through an act of complete selflessness, to allow the other sibling the express honor of acquiring that specific high-quality piece of real estate right now for the low, low price of some square footage and a little less closet space.

Two days ago, we finally closed on the house. The room dispute, however, had not been resolved. It was that day that my children left me utterly shocked.

My teenage daughter, honestly not known for her consideration or giving-nature, announced that she would voluntary take the smaller bedroom. She admitted that she had in fact had the larger bedroom at our previous home, and even though she is older it was only fair that she relinquish her claim on the larger abode.

My son, while initially jubilant with his apparent victory, was soon hit with a pang of guilt. His sister obviously wasn't happy. She immediately began picking my brain about ways to expand her new space. Was there any way to make the closet bigger? Could we buy her a wardrobe? Could we add some built-in shelves?

My son broke into the conversation. He wanted to trade rooms. He said he didn't need the bigger closet as much as she did. And he didn't mind that the other room was a little smaller.

She protested, he insisted.

Most of all, he said, he didn't like the creepy shed door outside the window. My daughter reluctantly accepted.

My son isn't afraid of a shed door. He just loves his sister.

The renovation of this classic 1936 home included a reimagining of a cluster of smal rooms that were no longer functional . We opened up the kitchen to the dining room and backyard , utilizing a view from the front of the house extending to the back yard and reconfigured the connection to the ground level , addressing the floor plan of bedrooms and bathrooms on both levels . The transformation has an incredible feeling of openness that wasn ' t there before . We were careful of the original architectural details , instaling new windows and doors that matched the old style , repeating arches in the openings , and keeping original trim where possible . The original vaulted living room was enhanced with updated furnishings from different eras to reflect the client ' s eclectic taste , from contemporary to mid - century to antique pieces . Our choices for both furniture and interior finishes were motivated by the vintage Storybook architecture , which is British - influenced and calls for classic materials that are of solid quality . Project Cost :$500,001-$750,000
